The Right to Stop Harassing Communication Under the FDCPA
The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) is a federal law that protects consumers from abusive, unfair, or deceptive debt collection tactics. Collectors also cannot misrepresent the consequences of not paying, such as saying you'll go to jail (which is illegal for most consumer debts) or that the debt will be sent to a credit bureau immediately if you don't pay within a certain timeframe. These tactics are designed to scare you into paying, but they are a violation of your legal rights.
